Trump Proposes Historic $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget with 44% Spending Increase

Analysis of the FY2027 defense budget request shows a $1.15 trillion base budget supplemented by $350 billion in reconciliation funding, the first time base defense spending has crossed $1 trillion. The 44% increase is the largest single-year surge since the Korean War. Key allocations include $760 billion for weapons procurement and modernization, $17.5 billion for the Golden Dome missile shield, $65.8 billion for 34 ships, and 85 F-35 fighters. Pentagon R&D spending would drop by one-third, a $4.5 billion reduction. Congress must still appropriate the funds amid the Iran war supplemental request exceeding $200 billion.

Analysis
The reliance on $350 billion in reconciliation funding, particularly $17.1 billion of the $17.5 billion Golden Dome allocation, creates a structural vulnerability: if reconciliation fails, the administration's signature missile defense program and much of its procurement surge collapse. The one-third R&D cut also risks a capability gap in future conflicts even as the Iran war demonstrates the need for rapid innovation.
