NASA Orbiter Discovers 225-Meter Lunar Crater From Rare Once-in-a-Century Impact
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter identified a 225-meter-wide, 43-meter-deep crater at the boundary between the Moon's highlands and mare plains. The impact occurred in 2024 but was detected through routine image comparisons. Planetary scientist Mark Robinson notes impacts of this magnitude are expected only once every 139 years. The crater's ejecta blanket extends hundreds of meters, with disturbances detected 120 km away, demonstrating hazards for future lunar infrastructure.
