Hanwha Aerospace Bids $1.1 Billion for Poongsan Ammunition Division

Hanwha Aerospace submitted a final bid of approximately 1.5 trillion won ($1.1 billion) for Poongsan Corp's munitions division, which produces everything from small-caliber rounds to large artillery shells. The acquisition would give Hanwha vertical integration, bundling its K-9 self-propelled howitzer platforms with in-house ammunition for export deals. Global ammunition demand has surged due to the Ukraine and Iran wars. Hanwha appears to be the only serious bidder after Hyundai Rotem and LIG Nex1 also expressed initial interest.

Analysis
This deal would make Hanwha the world's first vertically integrated artillery-plus-ammunition exporter, bundling K-9 howitzer platforms with in-house munitions. The timing is driven by surging global ammunition demand from both the Ukraine and Iran wars. South Korea's defense export strategy is consolidating around a few national champions, mirroring the approach that made it the world's fourth-largest arms exporter in 2025.
