IRGC Reports Two Tankers and Tugboat Caught Fire in Strait of Hormuz

BLUFIran's IRGC is leveraging real or fabricated Hormuz incidents to signal it can disrupt oil transit at will, raising insurance costs and pressuring Washington as post-midterm political dynamics shift.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Thursday that two oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire in separate incidents after attempting to use unauthorized routes through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters 12. The IRGC said one tanker struck a mine while crossing a passage south of the strait, and a supertanker caught fire while exiting the route in the eastern part of the waterway 13. A tugboat that approached the second vessel to help extinguish the fire also caught fire, the IRGC said 23. Middle East Eye reported that the IRGC called the southern route an "illegal southern passageway" and blamed the US for pushing vessels through mined passages, and the statement referred to the Democrats' midterm election sweep 4. The sources carry no independent confirmation of the incidents, casualties, or vessel identities.

Analysis
If accurate, the IRGC's account shows Tehran enforcing its Hormuz transit regime through mines and fire against ships using unapproved routes. The statement links the incidents to the US midterm defeat and Iran's frozen credits, so it doubles as a bargaining message to Washington ahead of possible talks. Shipowners and insurers will price the southern passage as mined whatever the cause. Confidence is low: all four outlets repeat a single IRGC statement, and no tracker, insurer, navy or imagery confirms any fire, vessel, casualty or location. This extends the October 18 claim of two mined tankers with a tugboat and supertanker fire. The IRGC may instead be inflating or causing the incidents to deter traffic and pressure Washington into releasing frozen funds.
