Saudi Arabia Intercepts Missiles Targeting Riyadh; Expels Iranian Military Diplomats

Iran launched three ballistic missiles and dozens of drones at Saudi Arabia on March 22. Saudi air defenses intercepted one missile; two others landed in uninhabited areas outside Riyadh. No damage was reported. Riyadh responded by declaring Iran's military attache, assistant military attache, and three additional staff persona non grata. Since February 28, Saudi Arabia has absorbed at least 45 ballistic missiles, seven cruise missiles, and nearly 600 drone strikes from Iran. The diplomatic expulsion represents the sharpest Saudi break with Tehran since the 2023 rapprochement brokered by China.

Analysis
The diplomat expulsion reverses the Saudi-Iran détente established in the 2023 Beijing-brokered normalization. Prior INTSUMs tracked Gulf states absorbing Iranian attacks without diplomatic response; the persona non grata declaration signals Riyadh's tolerance threshold has been crossed.
