Ukraine Restores External Power Supply to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant After IAEA-Brokered Ceasefire
BLUFRestored grid power relieves immediate nuclear safety pressure, but Zaporizhzhia will very likely revert to diesel dependency within 90 days absent a durable transmission corridor protection arrangement.
Ukrainian energy workers restored external power to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant at 19:02 on September 7 via the 330-kV Ferosplavna-1 line, with the plant now drawing 11 MW, according to Energoatom 12. The plant had run on diesel generators since August 20, when it lost external power for the tenth time since the 2022 occupation began 23. Energoatom said the repair was made possible by a coordinated local ceasefire that gave crews the conditions needed to fix the damaged line 12. World Nuclear News, citing IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, reported the ceasefire followed weeks of negotiations in which Russia and Ukraine agreed to an IAEA proposal establishing temporary ceasefire zones at two sites to allow repair teams from each side to work on separately damaged lines 3. The IAEA said it is continuing to coordinate further repairs on the backup Ferosplavna line, which was also disconnected in May 3.
AnalysisRestoration removes the immediate diesel-dependency risk but not the structural vulnerability, since the plant's grid connections remain hostage to frontline damage and ad hoc ceasefire arrangements rather than a durable fix. Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia plant will
very likely lose external power again and revert to emergency diesel generators within 90 days, given ten prior losses since 2022 and a backup Ferosplavna line still disconnected since May. Low confidence attaches to the repair's durability because the ceasefire is explicitly temporary and local, and neither belligerent has committed to standing protection for the transmission corridor. Continued IAEA-brokered repair coordination shows both sides recognize the safety stakes without addressing the underlying exposure.
