US Navy Plans Trident II Missile Successor and First New Nuclear Warhead in 40 Years

BLUFCongress will likely authorize full W93/Mk7 funding by September 2027, but the coupled missile-warhead timeline carries minimal schedule margin against the FY2039 fleet introduction deadline.

PAE SSP's June 25 update confirmed D5LE2 passed Milestone B in mid-2025 and is in engineering and manufacturing development, with initial fleet introduction set for fiscal year 2039 123. The W93/Mk7 warhead, developed jointly with the National Nuclear Security Administration, is the first new U.S. nuclear warhead program in nearly 40 years and is linked to the UK's Dreadnought-class submarine fleet 13. PAE SSP brought the Strategic Weapons Systems Ashore test facility online in November 2025 and broke ground on a new Engineering Test Facility in February, one of nearly 30 infrastructure projects planned through 2032 12.

Analysis
Simultaneous engineering development of D5LE2 and W93/Mk7 creates a tightly coupled schedule leaving little margin before the FY2039 fleet introduction, making sustained congressional authorization the enabling variable for the entire program. Congress will likely authorize full W93/Mk7 funding in the FY2027 NDAA, driven by bipartisan deterrence support and US-UK Dreadnought obligations. Analytic confidence is low: FY2027 budget negotiations remain unobservable and sourcing rests on a single PAE SSP program office release. The D5LE's confirmed service life into the 2040s gives Congress political cover to defer W93/Mk7 without visible consequence to deterrence credibility. If that deferral materializes, schedule compression cascades into Columbia-class readiness gaps by the early 2040s.
