IDF Soldier Indicted for Spying for Iran, Photographing US Refueling Planes at Israeli Airfield

BLUFIran's recruitment of serving conscripts to photograph US assets on Israeli bases will likely yield at least one more publicly announced espionage case by the end of November 2026.

Israel's military prosecution on Thursday indicted an IDF soldier, arrested in September, on charges of passing information to the enemy with intent to harm state security, passing information for the enemy's benefit, and contact with a foreign agent 123. A joint Shin Bet, police and IDF statement said he kept contact with Iranian operatives for about a year, knew his handler's identity, and was paid in cryptocurrency 12. Prosecutors allege he sent base locations and photographed interceptors, military vehicles and US refueling aircraft at an Israeli airfield, as well as details of his unit's readiness and his own call-up at the start of Operation Roaring Lion 123. He also allegedly gave the handler personal details of comrades and commanders, knowing recruitment was intended, and shared a Telegram group for pre-enlistees that the handler then joined 13. The handler allegedly offered $200,000 for travel to Iran, and a military court extended detention to November 12 12; JFeed reported the statement did not say whether he acted on the offer 4.

Analysis
Iran is using paid, long-running recruitment of conscripts to collect targeting-grade data on Israeli bases and on the US aircraft staged there. The handler's requests extended beyond imagery to comrades' personal details and a pre-enlistee Telegram group, which suggests a pipeline aimed at future recruits as well as serving personnel. Confidence is moderate: four outlets reported the same joint statement and comparable cases have recurred steadily for two years, but there is no independent evidence on how many handlers remain active. Israeli authorities will likely announce the arrest or indictment of at least one additional Israeli citizen or soldier on suspicion of spying for Iran between November 1 and November 30. The publicity may reflect deliberate deterrence messaging more than rising case volume, since the security services control announcement timing. Commanders at bases hosting US assets should treat personal-device photography as a counterintelligence exposure. Continued announcements would push the IDF and Shin Bet to tighten device and social-media screening for conscripts and for sites hosting US aircraft, while a quiet month would suggest the pipeline has been disrupted or is being handled without publicity.
