Kyiv supermarket shooting killing six classified as terrorism; attacker was 58-year-old born in Moscow

A 58-year-old gunman born in Moscow and long resident in Ukraine's Donetsk region opened fire on civilians in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district Saturday, killing four on the street before barricading inside a Velmart supermarket, where a fifth victim died and hostages were taken. Police killed the attacker after 40 minutes. Seven are now confirmed dead and 15 wounded. Ukrainian Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko classified the incident as terrorism. Zelensky said investigators are pursuing several theories; the attacker made no demands. Footage showing patrol officers fleeing during the attack prompted the patrol police chief to resign and opened an internal inquiry.

Analysis
The Moscow-born biography will very likely be exploited as a propaganda asset by both Kyiv and Moscow regardless of whether operational Russian tasking is ever established; the attacker's more-than-ten-year Ukrainian Army service record, corroborated across converging sources, complicates that framing without neutralizing it. The Prosecutor General's terrorism designation and the patrol-police chief's forced resignation after footage of officers fleeing transform the incident into a command-climate crisis, very likely accelerating an MVS reorganization within 30 days. The more durable concern is the pattern signaled: armed veterans and unresolved ethnic-Russian residents migrating into violent-crime space as ceasefire-adjacent months accumulate; the attack may equally be ordinary criminal violence mislabeled as terrorism for domestic political utility, the Moscow-born detail an opportunistic propagandistic overlay absent any operational Russian direction.
