Ukraine Discloses FP-7.x Anti-Ballistic Interceptor Specifications Under Freya Defence Project
BLUFFreya's distributed European supplier architecture and 48N6 technical lineage position Ukraine to field a credible domestic interceptor by late 2027, reducing dependence on contested Patriot deliveries.
Ukrainian defense company Fire Point co-founder Denys Shtilerman disclosed technical specifications of the FP-7.x interceptor missile on May 18, the centerpiece of the Freya pan-European ballistic missile defense project. The FP-7.x, derived from the Soviet-era 48N6 anti-aircraft missile used in S-300 and S-400 systems, is 7.25 meters long with a speed of 1,500 to 2,000 meters per second and uses a Diehl Defence infrared imaging seeker. Freya integrates NATO-standard Link-16 protocol, a Kongsberg command center, and radar options from SAAB, Thales, and Hensoldt. Fire Point has partnered with MBDA and signed a technology cooperation agreement with Diehl Defence, while a solid rocket fuel production facility is being established in Denmark near Skrydstrup air base. Shtilerman stated the first interception attempt is planned for the end of 2027.
Analysis
Freya's supplier web, comprising MBDA, Diehl Defence, Kongsberg, and radar options spanning Sweden, France, and Germany, is structured to insulate against single-ally failure points, per a single co-founder disclosure lacking independent verification. Alongside allied ABM transfer talks, this parallel domestic track hedges Ukraine against the delivery friction that has defined Western pledges. The 48N6 derivation hands Fire Point engineers precise knowledge of S-300 and S-400 engagement envelopes, an advantage rooted in adapting Russia's own interceptor against it. A sub-million-dollar target unit cost, if achieved, would undercut Patriot by an order of magnitude. The public disclosure may reflect investor signaling or European political messaging more than genuine program maturity.
