Ukrainian Businessman Accuses GUR Military Intelligence of Organizing Monaco Assassination Attempt

BLUFKyiv's inability to contain the Monaco allegations within a rogue-officer narrative risks converting a criminal case into a diplomatic crisis with the European partners financing its defense.

Vadym Yermolaiev, the Ukrainian businessman wounded in the June 29 Monaco bombing, said in a letter distributed by his law firm and published by Nice-Matin that serving and former officers of Ukraine's GUR military intelligence directorate organized the attack, alleging involvement extended to officers close to current or former GUR leadership 123. He said the blast, which struck as he entered his building with his partner and 13-year-old son, was intended to kill the whole family, leaving his partner critically wounded and both legs lost 23. GUR spokesman Andriy Yusov rejected the accusations as subjective political statements harmful to the investigation 2. Yermolaiev called on Monaco, France, Ukraine and international bodies to protect his family, witnesses and lawyers, and thanked President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prince Albert II and Emmanuel Macron for their support 23.

Analysis
Yermolaiev's letter names officers close to current or former GUR leadership, moving the case beyond the rogue-officer account Kyiv has offered and beyond the two men already charged in the chief suspect's killing. GUR's dismissal as a political statement never engages the specific claim, leaving the accusation unresolved rather than refuted, though all reporting traces to Yermolaiev's own letter and legal team with no independent line to test it against. His legal team may equally be building public pressure and international protection for a sanctioned businessman regardless of GUR's actual involvement. Monaco and French authorities now hold a finding that, if it implicates an allied service in a lethal operation on European soil, would strain Kyiv's standing with the same governments backing its war effort; the stakes are underscored by Zelensky's personal engagement with Yermolaiev, which already signals Kyiv recognizes them.
