Loyola Student Killing Suspect Identified as Undocumented Venezuelan; DHS Escalates Sanctuary City Confrontation

Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old Venezuelan national, was charged with first-degree murder of 18-year-old Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman near Tobey Prinz Beach on March 19. DHS confirmed the suspect was apprehended by Border Patrol in May 2023 and released. ICE lodged a detainer and DHS issued a pointed statement demanding Gov. Pritzker and Chicago's 'sanctuary politicians' not release the suspect, escalating the administration's confrontation with sanctuary jurisdictions. The victim's family expressed being 'gravely disappointed by the policies and failures that allowed this individual to remain.'
