Israel Intensifies Lebanon Ground Operations, Vows Occupation of Southern Security Zone

Israeli strikes killed at least 7 in Beirut's Jnah area and 2 in Khaldeh on April 2, with the IDF claiming 40 Hezbollah fighters killed in 24 hours. Ground operations that began March 16 continue toward the Litani River, with Defense Minister Katz vowing to control a security zone until the Hezbollah threat is removed. Since the March 2 offensive, 1,318 people have been killed and 3,935 wounded in Lebanon. A quarter of Lebanon's population has been displaced by mass evacuation orders from the south and Beirut's Dahiyeh suburbs.

Analysis
Katz's vow to hold a security zone to the Litani River echoes Israel's 1978-2000 occupation of southern Lebanon, a two-decade commitment that ultimately ended in withdrawal under Hezbollah pressure. With a quarter of Lebanon's population displaced, the humanitarian crisis is generating diplomatic friction even among allies (France condemned IDF intimidation of UNIFIL on April 1). The simultaneous Iran and Lebanon operations strain Israeli force allocation.
