France Assesses Chernobyl Containment Repair at 500 Million Euros After Russian Drone Strike

France's foreign minister reported that repairing the New Safe Confinement dome at Chernobyl will cost approximately 500 million euros ($576M) following damage from a Russian drone strike in February 2025. The strike created a 15-square-meter hole in the external cladding with wider damage across 200 square meters. The IAEA declared in December 2025 that the structure could no longer perform its main safety function. French firms Bouygues Travaux Publics and VINCI Construction are leading the assessment and repair through an EBRD-funded program.

Analysis
The 500M euro repair cost from a single drone strike exposes the disproportionate vulnerability of nuclear infrastructure to asymmetric attack. The IAEA declaration that the confinement structure can no longer perform its safety function means radioactive material from the 1986 disaster is effectively uncontained until repairs are complete.
