UK National Security Adviser Was Not Vetted Before Starting Role
BLUFPowell is very unlikely to leave his national security adviser post by end of November 2026, as the vetting controversy targets process failures rather than Powell himself and Downing Street shows no inclination to act.
The Spectator reports that Jonathan Powell was not security vetted before taking the post of national security adviser in November 2024 12. It bases this on evidence to parliament from Keir Starmer's former chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, who said Powell was appointed first and "we began the DV [developed vetting]" afterward 12. A parliamentary answer in March said Powell's vetting "was conducted to the usual standard set for Developed Vetting," but the government does not comment on individual cases and declined to say whether he passed without qualification 12. The Spectator says Powell's wife, Sarah Helm, made pro-Hamas social media posts before his appointment, and a new parliamentary question on whether he was vetted for his earlier Chagos envoy role awaits an answer 12.
AnalysisConfidence is moderate, resting on a single reporting stream, since The Spectator Australia only republishes The Spectator's original text, and on no sign that Downing Street is weighing Powell's removal. Jonathan Powell is
very unlikely to leave or announce his departure as national security adviser by November 30, 2026. The vetting gap shifts scrutiny from Powell personally to a process that let political appointments precede clearance. McSweeney's testimony extends the sequencing problem beyond Mandelson's briefings to a second senior post. Ministers' non-answers in March and since point to continued refusal to confirm the outcome. A pending parliamentary question on his Chagos envoy clearance is the next test, and an evasive or negative reply would widen pressure on the Cabinet Office and the security services. Powell may have held interim clearance that let him start, and the refusal to comment may be routine practice rather than concealment. If he stays, ministers can keep declining comment and parliamentary committees must press directly for the result. If he goes, the prime minister must name a successor and the Cabinet Office must justify the sequence.
