Pentagon Fires Top Military Planner Over Classified Leaks About Iran and Ukraine
BLUFSylvia's firing signals escalating Pentagon counterintelligence pressure on staff involved in Iran and Ukraine planning, but it is unlikely that the Justice Department files criminal charges by the end of December.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, director of the Joint Staff's J5 strategy, plans and policy directorate, this week, and spokesman Sean Parnell cited an Air Force OSI investigation without naming him 12. A Department of War official told Fox News that Sylvia failed three polygraphs and that the case was referred to the Justice Department 1, while Axios, relayed by UNITED24, reported four failed polygraphs and that Sylvia acknowledged the disclosures on video 3. Per Axios, the internal report says Sylvia leaked on Ukraine aid and Iran to two reporters starting in June 2025, using Signal and a diner meeting, and deleted one message thread, which officials suspect was intentional and Sylvia calls accidental 34. The official said Sylvia was not a central Iran war planner, a role belonging to CENTCOM 12.
AnalysisConfidence is high, but it rests on thin public evidence: the referral is attested only by an anonymous Pentagon official, and the Justice Department declined to address Sylvia specifically. Fox News and Military.com both draw on Pentagon officials and agree on the polygraph and referral claims, while UNITED24 and Pravda EN relay a separate Axios stream neither independently confirms. It is
unlikely that the Department of Justice publicly confirms a criminal investigation of, or files criminal charges against, Sylvia between November 1 and December 31. The three aides fired in April 2025 were never charged, and the July leak task force has produced no visible prosecution. Sylvia's reported video admission and cooperation give prosecutors a documented case but reduce any need for a public charge soon. The September sweep of roughly 50 Joint Staff personnel disclosed no failures, so a three-star's firing marks a sharp escalation. The firing may serve mainly as internal deterrence and cover for a policy dispute with Elbridge Colby, with the referral a threat never pursued publicly. Joint Staff officers and reporters' sources should plan for legal exposure if Justice acts. If it stays silent, leadership will keep relying on firings and polygraphs.
