GAO Finds Pentagon Weapons Testing Office Cuts Leave 90 Programs Without Independent Oversight

BLUFPentagon weapons programs now face the weakest independent testing regime in decades, and Congress has yet to enforce the reporting deadlines that would expose fielded systems' undocumented shortfalls.

A GAO report released June 30 found that Pentagon workforce cuts to the Office of the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) have reduced independent oversight of weapons programs, with the office's oversight list falling from 265 programs in fiscal 2024 to 173 in fiscal 2025, a drop of more than 90 12.
