Kim Jong Un Inspects New Destroyer as North Korea Expands Naval Ambitions

North Korea's Korean Central News Agency reported on May 8 that Kim Jong Un boarded the destroyer Choe Hyon off the country's west coast on Thursday to review its maneuverability and ordered the ship handed over to the navy by mid-June. KCNA separately reported Kim visited a munitions factory on Wednesday to inspect 155-millimeter self-propelled gun-howitzers with a stated striking range exceeding 60 kilometers, to be deployed at a southern border artillery unit within the year. Kim stated the extended range 'will provide a great change and advantage in the land operations of our army,' according to KCNA. An AP wire report noted Pyongyang also announced plans to deploy tactical missile systems and multiple rocket launchers along the border with South Korea.
