F-15E Shot Down Over Iran: WSO Missing, SAR Mission Loses A-10 and Takes Helicopter Fire

An F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran on April 3, with both crew members ejecting. U.S. special forces recovered the pilot from Iranian territory, but the weapons system officer remains missing. The search and rescue operation suffered cascading losses: an A-10 Warthog providing close air support was hit by Iranian fire and the pilot ejected over the Persian Gulf before being recovered; two Blackhawk helicopters were struck by small arms fire during extraction, wounding crew members. An Iranian regional governor offered a bounty for the missing crew member. Trump stated the loss would not affect negotiations.

Analysis
The F-15E loss is the first manned U.S. combat aircraft lost in combat since 2003, and the cascading SAR losses suggest Iranian anti-access capabilities are more layered than initial intelligence assessments projected. The bounty on the missing WSO introduces hostage-scenario risk that could fundamentally shift war dynamics, as occurred with Jessica Lynch in 2003.
