China PLAN and JMSDF escalate standoff: Type 076 Sichuan deploys to South China Sea as destroyer flotilla transits Yokoate Strait
Seoul Economic Daily reported on April 22 that China and Japan are simultaneously ramping up naval presence with warships, long-range missiles, and drones, citing PLA Eastern Theater Command spokesperson Senior Captain Shi Yi's announcement that a 133rd flotilla had transited the Yonaguni-Iriomote waterway in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture after far-sea combat training. South China Morning Post and Taipei Times reported Japan's simultaneous deployment of two Type 88 / Type 25 anti-ship missile batteries targeting approaches to the Taiwan Strait. China also deployed its first Type 076 amphibious assault ship Sichuan, publicly dubbed a drone carrier, from Shanghai to the South China Sea. Japan committed to the Balikatan exercise for the first time, deploying warships, aircraft, anti-ship systems, and roughly 1,400 troops alongside Australia, Canada, France, and New Zealand.
Corroborated across Seoul Economic Daily, SCMP, and Taipei Times, the concurrent deployment is a calibrated PLAN move to normalize Japan-proximate passages as routine, with the Yokoate transit confirmed by PLA Eastern Theater Command spokesperson Shi Yi. The Yokoate waterway sits closer to the Japanese home islands than the Miyako Strait, compressing JMSDF warning timelines and complicating carrier air-wing operational security. That pressure very likely accelerates JMSDF's ASW and anti-shipping posture shift over the coming months. Japan's Balikatan 2026 commitment with Type 88/25 batteries and 1,400 troops is the public counter-signal. JMSDF P-1 maritime-patrol coverage east of Okinawa may not be sustainable at current production pace, a structural constraint that limits Japan's ability to hold the new PLAN egress geometry under persistent surveillance. A sea incident or miscalculation is unlikely in the coming weeks, but the underlying probability is rising.
