Japan Scrambles Fighters as Chinese Reconnaissance Drones and Aircraft Track Keen Sword 27 Exercise

BLUFJapan's Joint Staff will likely report additional scrambles against Chinese drones near the southwest islands before Keen Sword 27 ends on October 29, as Beijing exploits routine surveillance to map allied air-defense responses at minimal cost.

Japan's Joint Staff reported that Japan Air Self-Defense Force fighters scrambled on October 19, the opening day of Keen Sword 27, against a Chinese BZK-005 drone, a Y-9 intelligence aircraft and a TB-001 armed drone 12. The BZK-005 and Y-9 transited the Okinawa-Miyakojima gap into the Pacific and returned. The TB-001 entered between Yonaguni and Taiwan, reached waters off Amami Oshima, and exited via the Miyako gap 1. Defense Minister Koizumi said it was the first publicly confirmed Chinese drone passage there since June 30, 2025, and declined to link the flights to the exercise 1. SCMP, relayed by ua.news, added that Japan tracked seven Chinese vessels, and that the Liaoning group had earlier entered the Pacific 2. The exercise runs to October 29 with about 45,000 Japanese personnel and 11,000 to 12,000 US personnel 123.

Analysis
We have high confidence in this assessment, based on consistent reporting of the October 19 flights, five publicly announced drone flights already this fiscal year, and several sightings in the two weeks before the exercise opened. Japan's Joint Staff will likely report at least one more scramble against Chinese drones or reconnaissance aircraft near the southwest islands between October 23 and October 29. That window spans the rest of Keen Sword 27, so Beijing can keep collecting on allied dispersal and air-defense procedures at low cost. The four secondary outlets all draw on one Joint Staff release, so they are a single reporting stream repeated, not independent confirmation. The flights may instead be routine PLA training on a fixed schedule, with the timing coincidental. Tokyo gains little by linking them to the exercise, but each scramble draws down Southwestern Air Defense Force flight hours. Japan's Defense Ministry and Joint Staff should therefore plan for sustained scramble demand and weigh counter-drone investment in the pending security-document revision, where the armed TB-001's Miyako gap passage strengthens the case for unmanned-aircraft provisions. A quiet stretch would instead suggest Beijing is limiting visible collection, letting planners hold current readiness allocations.
