Bulgaria Activates EU Rapid Alert System Against Russian Election Interference

Bulgaria activated the EU's Digital Services Act alert system and Rapid Alert System ahead of its April 19 parliamentary elections, the country's ninth since 2021. A Russian-linked 'Pravda ecosystem' of automated websites produces nearly 6,000 Bulgarian-language articles per month to manipulate search engines and AI systems, while over 30 Telegram channels have generated 180 million views in the past year. Bulgaria formally requested EU assistance in countering the interference campaign, which combines the Portal Kombat network with a domestic amplification ecosystem.

Analysis
Activating the EU's Digital Services Act alert system against the Pravda disinformation ecosystem for the first time creates a precedent for future elections. Bulgaria's ninth election since 2021 makes it uniquely vulnerable to cumulative interference effects.
