Xi Meets Taiwan Opposition Leader in Beijing as PLA Naval Buildup Accelerates Near Island

Chinese President Xi met KMT chairwoman Cheng Li-wun in Beijing on April 10, the first visit by a Taiwanese opposition leader in a decade. Xi stated China will absolutely not tolerate Taiwan's independence. Simultaneously, Taiwan tracked a spike in Chinese naval vessels from ~70 in late March to nearly 100, corroborated by separate intelligence reports reviewed by Reuters. The PLA has been sending warplanes and naval vessels near Taiwan almost daily, staging live-fire drills. The diplomatic engagement occurs ahead of a planned Xi-Trump summit in May.

Analysis
Beijing's peace messaging through the KMT visit directly contradicts the 40% surge in naval deployments to nearly 100 vessels. The gap between diplomatic theater and military posture is the signal: the meeting provides political cover for continued force projection. The reserved airspace declaration off the eastern coast (through May 5) suggests drills are planned regardless of the KMT visit's outcome.
