NSA Releases Zero Trust Guidance for Hardening Critical Operational Technology Environments

NSA's sheet moves Defense Department OT owners from planning to execution: inventory assets, close direct internet paths, and wrap compensating controls around controllers that cannot run modern security agents. The 26 activities target basic hygiene failures, default passwords and exposed remote access, which the guidance links to water and energy compromises, so fixes should be cheap and fast rather than hardware-dependent. Its claim that adversaries use AI it terms "superintelligence" to automate reconnaissance and exploit development cites no incidents or attribution. That language may be framing added to a compliance-alignment product that repackages existing zero trust requirements for OT, not evidence of new adversary capability. Confidence is low: the sourcing is a single NSA document, with both outlets amplifying it and neither independently verifying the threat claims or any implementation timeline.
