Kremlin-Seized German Retailer Metro AG Transfers 1 Billion Rubles to Russian Military Fund
Metro Russia, placed under state temporary management by presidential decree on September 28, announced on October 23 a 1 billion ruble ($12.4 million) donation to the All-Russia People's Front's "Everything for Victory!" fund
Within a month of the seizure decree, the state-appointed administrator diverted over $12 million of Metro Russia's revenue to a Kremlin-linked military procurement fund, turning "temporary management" into a war-financing extraction channel. The administrator, UK Torg Rus, was incorporated three weeks before its appointment, so independent commercial stewardship was never plausible. Meduza reports Metro itself asked for the arrangement to "act preemptively," which, if accurate, means the parent started the process whose result it now disavows. Danone, Carlsberg and other Western firms under similar decrees face the same extraction risk. This may instead have been a one-time performative gesture rather than a systematic revenue stream, and Metro AG's objection may be staged to protect its EU standing. Confidence is moderate: The Moscow Times and Meduza independently report on-record Russian statements, but Metro AG's denial arrives secondhand through Deutsche Welle, and both outlets' reliability records are mixed.
