USGS Discovers 328 Years Worth of Lithium Import Equivalent Buried in Appalachian Region

The USGS on April 28 released findings estimating 2.3 million metric tons of lithium oxide in Appalachian pegmatite formations, equivalent to 328 years of U.S. imports at 2025 consumption levels. Fortune reported the deposits split between the Carolinas (approximately 1.43 million metric tons) and western Maine and New Hampshire (roughly 900,000 metric tons). Bloomberg cited the same USGS data as sufficient to power 130 million electric vehicles. USGS Director Ned Mamula said in a statement the Appalachians "contain enough lithium to help meet the nation's growing needs"; Fortune noted, citing the Energy Institute, that U.S. domestic production totaled only 610 metric tons in 2024 and that existing lithium processing infrastructure is concentrated outside Appalachia.

The USGS assessment, corroborated across Fortune, Bloomberg, and OilPrice, converts a strategic vulnerability on paper but not operationally: processing infrastructure is absent from the region, multi-state permitting adds years, and domestic production stood at only 610 metric tons in 2024. The deposit's fragmentation across multiple states and Appalachian regulatory density may make bulk extraction at China-displacing scale politically infeasible regardless of reserve volume. China's hold on global lithium processing amplifies the strategic case for federal action, but political pressure alone has not historically converted mineral assessments into funded programs. A federal program targeting Appalachian extraction before January 2027 is a roughly even chance.
