SAFE Act Proposes Warrant Requirement for 200,000+ Annual U.S. Person Queries
The Lee-Durbin SAFE Act would require a FISA order or warrant before accessing Americans' communications collected under Section 702. The FBI conducted over 200,000 warrantless U.S. person queries in a single year -- more than 500 per day. A competing Government Surveillance Reform Act from Lee-Wyden offers broader protections. Neither bill has committee scheduling with 31 days remaining.
