31st MEU Diversion to Middle East Creates Indo-Pacific Amphibious Gap

The redeployment of the 31st MEU and USS Tripoli from Okinawa to the Middle East temporarily eliminates Marine amphibious presence in the western Pacific. The gap comes as China-Taiwan tensions remain elevated and the NDS simultaneously demands Europe shoulder more of its own defense burden, exposing the persistent force-structure tension between CENTCOM and INDOPACOM requirements that has defined U.S. military planning since the pivot to Asia.
