US Navy Boarding Operations Seize Nearly $600 Million in Iranian Crude From Shadow Fleet Tankers in Indian Ocean

BLUFIt is unlikely that a US court completes forfeiture or the government takes custody of any seized Iranian crude by November 30, 2026, given weeks of transit time remaining and an untested prize-court procedure.

US forces boarded the tankers Tifani and Majestic X in the Indian Ocean in April, when the US announced its naval blockade of Iran, and boarded a third, Lenore (also called Davina), in June 12. Bloomberg reported that Homeland Security Investigations said agents were executing federal warrants to seize the tankers and roughly 4 million barrels of Iranian crude, while the Justice Department had opened forfeiture proceedings against Tifani and Majestic X 1. Bloomberg shipping data showed the first two vessels off Brazil in late September, with the third rounding the Cape of Good Hope; the three carry nearly $600 million of crude at current prices 123. The US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, Aaron Reitz, said his office is ready to adjudicate prizes brought to the district 12, and Iran calls the seizures piracy 3.

Analysis
Confidence is moderate, resting on consistent shipping-data tracking of the vessels' positions but limited by the lack of a filed prize-court docket or a confirmed US port destination. Tifani and Majestic X make 8 to 9 knots off Brazil and Lenore trails after rounding the Cape of Good Hope, so Texas arrival is weeks away at the earliest. It is unlikely that a US federal court issues a forfeiture order or that the US takes custody of the cargo of Tifani, Majestic X or Lenore by November 30, 2026. The Justice Department would then rely on a prize-court procedure last used in 1898, and owner challenges delayed the Skipper case. Reporting is one stream, since Maritime Executive and Fortune repeat Bloomberg and Kpler data and no source is primary. The tankers may still arrive faster than their speeds imply, and a quick default or consent order on the cargo could meet the criteria before the end of November. A YES would show prize-law seizure works as a revenue tool and could prompt Treasury and Justice to widen the program, while a NO leaves 6 million barrels in limbo. Iran could retaliate against shipping, as after the 2023 Suez Rajan seizure.
