Two Americans Sentenced for Running Laptop Farms That Enabled North Korean IT Worker Fraud

The Justice Department announced May 6 that Matthew Isaac Knoot of Nashville and Erick Ntekereze Prince of New York each received 18-month prison sentences for hosting laptop farms that enabled DPRK IT workers to fraudulently obtain remote employment at U.S. companies. Knoot was sentenced May 1 by Judge Eli Richardson in the Middle District of Tennessee; Prince was sentenced May 6 by Judge Darrin P. Gayles in the Southern District of Florida. DOJ court documents state the two separate schemes impacted nearly 70 U.S. companies and generated more than $1.2 million for the DPRK. Both defendants received company-shipped laptops at their residences and installed unauthorized remote desktop software so that overseas co-conspirators could appear as local workers; Knoot was ordered to pay $15,100 in restitution and forfeit an equal sum, Prince to forfeit $89,000.
