Magnitude 7.5 Sanriku-offshore earthquake triggers Japan tsunami warning, 176,000 evacuated across five prefectures

A preliminary magnitude 7.5 earthquake, subsequently revised by JMA to 7.7, struck off Japan's Sanriku coast in the Pacific at roughly 4:53 pm local time on 20 April at a shallow 10-kilometer depth. A three-meter tsunami warning was issued, with an 80-centimeter wave confirmed at Kuji port in Iwate prefecture within one hour. Evacuation orders covered roughly 82,811 households and 175,957 people across Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima; four evacuation-related injuries were reported. The Japan Meteorological Agency and Cabinet Office later issued a rare special advisory assessing a 1% probability of a mega-quake on the northern coast within the week.

Analysis
The JMA advisory is only the second mega-quake warning ever issued, corroborated across CNN, Japan Times, and NBC. It almost certainly forces Tokyo to pre-position emergency assets along the Tohoku-Hokkaido corridor within 72 hours and very likely delays the Maritime Self-Defense Force port rotation at Ominato planned for late April. For INDOPACOM, the compounding drag from Balikatan exercises and Iran-war resource demands creates real force-posture friction; expect visible USFJ humanitarian posturing at Misawa as a substitute for the operational tempo drop rather than genuine surge capacity. North-Pacific maritime and reinsurance lines will reprice within the next one to two weeks.
