State Privacy Legislation Surge: Hawaii Bans Geolocation Sales, Virginia Restricts Precise Location Data
Hawaii's SB 1163 passed the Senate on March 10, prohibiting the sale of geolocation and browser data without consent and banning data collection through background device microphone access. Virginia's SB 338 passed the legislature, amending the VCDPA to ban the sale of precise geolocation data. Alabama and Kentucky also advanced consumer data privacy amendments. Federal comprehensive privacy legislation remains stalled with no significant congressional effort expected in 2026.
